“Man must rise above the Earth—to the top of the atmosphere and beyond—for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives.”
While the Missis is the Barrister, I am the aviator in our home. Since childhood, I wanted to soar with the eagles. Awestruck by their ability to gracefully glide through the rising thermals only to quickly dive where the convergence of cooler air meets the warmth of the earth. Blessed to amazing parents who supported a boyhood dream, I earned my wings and lost the “tail” of my shirt while most of my peers sought their driver’s licenses. For a number of years I pursued a career as a professional aviator. Had it not been for a series of world changing cataclysmic events, I probably would still be flying; however, I am now bound to the earth.
The passion for aviation still lives in my blood. Maybe it is appropriate that the Aviation is a standard cocktail in our household. Resembling a cloud cresting a mountain’s summit, the cocktail’s hazy appearance brought on by the crème de violette is sometimes surprising to new flyers. The citrusy tart finish, however, lingers after it hits you in the face; an all too familiar feeling for those fortunate enough to remember the lip-smacking experience of their first solo landing. Have a sip and soar.
2 oz gin, we use Aviation, a rather soft American Gin
1/2 oz Maraschino liqueur
1/2 oz Lemon Juice (Fresh)
1/4 oz Creme de Violette
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour all liquids into the vestibule and vigorously shake until ice cold. Strain into a champagne goblet. Gaze in awe as the elixir settles into a hazy picture reminiscent of flying through the clouds.
